How to pay your Self-Assessment tax bill

Updated: Sep 20

When is tax payable?

Payments for Self-Assessment tax bills are payable twice yearly by:

  • 31 January (last year's "balancing payment" + first payment on account*)

  • 31 July (second payment on account*)

*You'll usually be asked to make Payments on Account if last year's tax bill exceeded £1,000.

How to pay your tax?

Whichever payment method you choose, be sure to quote your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), which we provide by email once we've submitted your SA Return. It looks like "0000000000K".

The video below explains how to make payments via HMRC's app (the easiest way to pay).

To pay via online banking:

  • Pay to: HMRC SA Cumbernauld

  • Account no. 12001039

  • Sort code: 08 32 10

  • Quote your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR): 0000000000K

If you can't pay your tax bill on time

If you can't pay your tax on time you'll be charged interest + penalties, see our post: Don't miss the 31 January Tax Return deadline, under the heading: Penalties for late payment
